Fatima Sana to Lead Pakistan as Nida Dar Sidelined with Injury, Diana Baig Requires Surgery

Fatima Sana Steps Up as Captain in Christchurch Clash

Christchurch, Dec 14, 2023 – In a blow to the Pakistan women’s cricket team, captain Nida Dar has been forced to sit out the second ODI match against New Zealand following a concussion scare resulting from a facial injury sustained in the previous game. Consequently, Fatima Sana, the talented 22-year-old fast bowler, has been appointed as the team’s captain for the upcoming match, with Dar’s availability for the subsequent game yet to be determined.

Dar suffered the injury during the first ODI when she was struck on the face by a powerful shot while delivering her seventh over against Sophie Devine of New Zealand. After receiving immediate medical attention on the field, Dar was advised to rest for two days to facilitate her recovery.

Friday’s match in Christchurch will mark Sana’s debut as captain of the Pakistan women’s team. Earlier this year, she led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the ACC Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Moreover, Sana captained the PCB Blasters to victory in the T20 Women’s Cricket Tournament.

Expressing her gratitude,Fatima Sana stated,”It is an absolute honor to lead the Pakistan women’s side in ODI cricket,despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Nida Dar’s injury.She has always been an inspiration and I wish her a speedy recovery.”

She further added, “Following our historic T20I series triumph against New Zealand, the team is determined to showcase their skills in the ODI series as well. Despite the setback in the first ODI, we are fully prepared and motivated to excel in tomorrow’s game.”

Pakistan has experienced a string of injuries during their tour of New Zealand, with Diana Baig and Shawaal Zulfiqar also sidelined alongside Nida Dar.Baig,who sustained a finger injury during a practice session prior to the first match,has undergone surgery on her index finger of the bowling arm.As a result,Baig will be out of competitive cricket for the next four weeks.

Pakistan’s squad for the second ODI includes the following players: Fatima Sana (captain), Aliya Riaz, Bismah Maroof, Ghulam Fatima, Muneeba Ali (wicket-keeper), Najiha Alvi (wicket-keeper), Nashra Sundhu, Natalia Parvaiz, Omaima Sohail, Sadaf Shamas, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Umm-e-Hani, and Waheeda Akhtar.
