India Gears Up for South Africa Test Series Amid Concerns Over Shami’s Availability
New Delhi,In a recent report, concerns have surfaced regarding Mohammed Shami participation in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. While India prepares to face the Proteas with a strong squad of over 75 players for their multi format tour, great players such as Virat Kohli,Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah are set to join the Indian camp.Kohli, who missed out on the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour, will be rejoining the team for the Test series, aiming to make a significant impact. However,it appears that India might have to face the two match Test series without seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami.
With an impressive track record of 229 wickets in 64 Tests,Shami absence would be a blow to the Indian team.
Following a successful campaign at the One Day International (ODI) World Cup in India, Shami was rested for the subsequent T20I series against Australia. The veteran pacer showcased his exceptional skills during the 2023 World Cup, where he emerged as the standout performer for Rohit Sharma’s side. Despite India finishing as runners-up in the tournament, Shami was the highest wicket-taker, claiming an impressive tally of 24 wickets. However, reports suggest that Shami had to overcome ankle discomfort during the ICC event.
In a recent report by Cricbuzz, it has been revealed that Shami’s availability for the Test series against South Africa is in serious doubt. The report indicates that Shami could potentially miss the entire series against the hosts. As the last batch of players, including skipper Rohit Sharma, gear up to leave for Johannesburg on December 15, Shami will not be among the stars joining the squad for the series.
The absence of Shami raises questions about his replacement. Alongside skipper Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, Navdeep Saini, and Harshit Rana are also set to travel to South Africa via Dubai on Friday. Notably, the selectors have not yet named a replacement for Shami. However, India can consider selecting a like-for-like player from its T20I and ODI squads to fill the void left by Shami’s potential absence.
The Board of Control for in India (BCCI) stated, “Mr. Mohd. Shami is undergoing medical treatment, and his availability is subject to fitness,” while announcing the squad for the South Africa series. In preparation for the Boxing Day Test at Centurion on December 26,India can finalize its squad during the three-day warm-up game starting on December 20.
As cricket fans eagerly await the outcome, all eyes will be on the Indian team, hoping for a successful campaign against the Proteas, even in the possible absence of Mohammed Shami.Meanwhile,Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion in the squad brings a ray of hope for Indian cricket enthusiasts,as they bring their expertise and skill to strengthen the team’s chances in the upcoming Test series.
