Rahul Dravid, the former Indian cricketer and current head coach of the Indian cricket team, has accepted the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) offer to extend his term.Although the specific duration of his second stint is yet to be disclosed,it will encompass at least until the 2024 T20 World Cup in June.
Continuing the Legacy:
Dravid, who initially assumed the role in November 2021 for a two-year tenure, concluded his first term after the 2023 ODI World Cup.Throughout his coaching tenure, India achieved remarkable success, ascending to the top spot in Test,ODI and T20I rankings.Despite their dominance,India fell short in winning any ICC trophies, finishing as semi-finalists in the 2022 T20 World Cup and runners-up in both the 2023 World Test Championship and 2023 ODI World Cup.Notably,India’s journey in the ODI World Cup showcased their impressive form, winning all nine league matches and the semi-final before succumbing to Australia in the final.
ESPNcricinfo has learned that the BCCI’s decision to retain Dravid as the head coach aimed at maintaining the structure he had meticulously established over the past two years. The board was concerned that introducing a new coach might disrupt the team’s progress and chemistry.
Expressing his gratitude,Dravid stated,”The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable.Together,we have borne witness to both triumphs and hardships and throughout this journey, our camaraderie and support have been exceptional.I take immense pride in the culture we have cultivated in the dressing room – a culture that exhibits resilience in moments of triumph as well as adversity. The abundant skills and talent within our team are unparalleled and we have consistently emphasized following the right process and adhering to our preparations, which has undeniably influenced our overall performance.”
Furthermore, Dravid acknowledged the BCCI and its Office Bearers for their trust, support, and endorsement of his vision. He also expressed deep appreciation for his family’s unwavering sacrifices and support during his time away from home. Dravid, along with the team, remains committed to pursuing excellence as they face new challenges following the World Cup.
Dravid’s second stint as head coach will kick off with India’s tour of South Africa, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs starting on December 10.Subsequently,they will engage in a two-Test series against South Africa in Centurion (from December 26) and Cape Town (from January 3).Following this, India will engage in a five-Test series against England on home ground before participating in the highly anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup in June.
BCCI’s Full Backing:
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, affirmed the board’s unwavering support for Dravid’s leadership. Commending India’s remarkable performance, Shah highlighted the team’s top rankings across all formats as a testament to Dravid’s vision, guidance, and strategic roadmap. Shah reassured that the head coach possesses the board’s complete backing, and they will provide all necessary support to sustain success at the international level.
Extension for Support Staff:
In addition to Dravid’s extension, the BCCI has also extended the terms for India’s dedicated support staff, namely Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach).
With Rahul Dravid’s contract extension, the Indian cricket team aims to continue their pursuit of excellence under his guidance. Dravid’s invaluable experience and strategic approach will be crucial as the team prepares for various upcoming challenges, including the 2024 T20 World Cup. The BCCI’s endorsement of Dravid’s vision and the continuation of the support staff testify to their unwavering commitment to sustained success in international cricket.
